As of the current time, researchers do not understand what truly
causes neuropathy.  Neuropathy is a condition that causes tingling,
burning or stabbing sensation in hands or legs/feet.  This condition is
the bane of the existence of many diabetics.  They are not the only
compartment of society that is afflicted with it, but it tends to be more
common in diabetics.  This is why diabetics must be ever mindful of
their feet and toes.  Feeling can be lost as a result of neuropathy and
many serious injuries have happened without the knowledge of the
person until it is often very late in the process.  If you have good or
excellent BG's, and your A1C is in line, you may not be one of those
who have to deal with this.  There is no guarantee of course, but it is
definitely more common in those diabetics that have high BG's.

If you are a diabetic trying to avoid neuropathy, it is recommended that
you eat a diet rich in alpha-lipoic acid.   This would be a diet that
contains spinach, broccoli, peas, tomatoes, brussel sprouts and liver.

Several diet supplements include alpha-lipoic acid, but because of
safety issues, it is recommended that you speak with your general
practitioner or diabetes educator about the supplement or multi
vitamin that has a high percentage of alpha-lipoic acid.  There may
also be a drug interaction that needs to be thought of, too.

Because neuropathy is painful, and the alpha-lipoic acid does help to
relieve this pain, it is very worth your while to even make a special
appointment to speak to your doctor about this issue. As of now, no
side effects are known in regards to alpha-lipoic acid.
