USES
Insuling aspart is used to treat diabetes mellitus. It works by helping sugar (glucose) get
into cells. Insulin aspart is a faster acting insulin and works for a shorter period of time.
It is usually used in combinatin with a medium or long-acting insulin medication.
Controlling high blood sugars helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease,
circulation problems and blindness.
SIDE EFFECTS
Injection site reaction include pain, redness and irritation. If any of these persist or
worsen contact your healthcare professional.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects of low blood
sugars (hypoglycemia) occur: fainting, cold swerat, shaking/tremors, unusually fast
heart beat, headache, slurred speech or seizures.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious sided effects of high
blood sugars (hyperglycemia)occur: unusual drowsiness, confusion, rapid breathing,
fruity breath odor, increased urination, unusual thirst.
Seek medical attention if any of these symptoms of allergic reaction occur. Some
symptoms are: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing.
PRECAUTIONS
Tell your doctor if you have any of these in your medical history: kidney problems, liver
problems, nerve disease (diabetic neuropathy), thyroid problems or any allergies
especially to other insulin products.
Fever, serious infections or injuries, emotional stress or major surgery may cause your
blood sugars to increase and make this medication less effective temporarily. Consult
your health care professional for details and a treatment plan.
The elderly may be more sensitive to its effect on their blood sugars. This product
should only be used when absolutely necessary during pregnancy. It is not known
whether this medication passes into breast milk. Discuss the use of this product with
your health care professional.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Tell your doctor if you use any other prescription medications or over the counter
medications especially: other insulin products (regular, NPH), oral diabetes medications
(glyberide pioglitazone) ACE inhibitors (enalapril lisinopril), beta-blockers (metoprolol,
propranolol), dispoyramide, fibrates (clofibrate, gemfibrozil),niacin, fluoxetine, MAO
inhibitors (furazolidone, isocarboxazid,linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine,
procarbazine,selegiline, tranylcypromine) propoxyphene, salicylates(aspirin) octreotide,
sulfa antibiotics(sulfamethoxazole) corticosteroids (prednisone), danazol, "water
pills"(furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), sympathomimetic drugs (albuterol, epinephrine)
isoniazid, certain psychiatric medicines (phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine),
somatropin, thyroid medicine, estrogens and progestins(including birth control pills),
clonidine, lithium, pentamidine, guanethidine, reserpine.
MISSED DOSE
It is very important not to miss any doses. Follow your prescription regimen exactly.
Discuss with your healthcare professional what you should do if you miss a dose.
STORAGE
Store unopened vial/cartridges in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees (2 and 8
degrees C) away from light. Do not freeze. If refrigeration is not possible, this
medication can be stored at temperatures less than 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) for 28
days.
