Precautions To Follow When Exercising

By Donna Yancy

Always check with your healthcare professional before engaging in any
exercise program.

1. Check blood glucose levels before and after exercising.

2. Do not exercise just after taking an insulin shot.

3. Do not use saunas and hot tubs immediately after exercising.

4. Always carry a carbohydrate snack, juice or candies.

5. Drink enough fluids to stay well hydrated.

6. Avoid alcohol before and immediately after exercise.

7. Wear appropriate clothes, shoes and socks (to avoid infection caused
by chafing and blisters) when exercising.

8. Always have an exercise partner.

9. Exercise speeds the absorption of insulin, so try to shoot your insulin
in parts of the body that wont be exercised in your chosen activity. For
prolonged activity discuss with your health care professional whether
you should cut back on your insulin dosage.

10. Carry identification, wear a medic alert bracelet and carry a cell
phone in case you have a low and can not get home again. If you
become unconscious the id and the medic alert bracelet will help them
locate your family and treat your medical problems.
