You look out the window and what do you see? Nothing, it is dark outside.  You
get dressed to go out and when you open the door you can actually smell the
cold!! Feel it? Sure.  So how do you get yourself ready to exercise in the
winter? You just push yourself.  There are things you can do and purchase in
order to get the most benefit of walking or jogging in the winter. Your first
thought should be to see your physician.  Many diabetics have limitations of
exercising in the cold.  If it is too cold outside it can stress your cardiovascular
system.  That isn’t good if you have heart issues!   You also need to be
concerned about it being dark later in the morning or that it gets dark earlier.
You need to wear light clothes so you can be seen while you are walking or
jogging.  You should also put some reflecting tape on your clothes and shoes.
You can buy reflecting vests as well.  The more spots you can put the reflecting
tape the better you can be seen.

Why exercise in the winter? Many of us seem to put on a little extra blubber in
the winter. Our bodies are still stuck in prehistoric days and we are getting
ready for the starvation time when we didn’t get fresh food or the food supply
was scarce.  Doesn’t happen these days for sure, but our bodies are pre-set.
What benefits can you get from exercising in winter? You can improve your
mood and shake those blues.  Create some feel-good endorphins.  You will also
increase your energy and you can improve your sleep.

For your feet you want to locate some polypropylene or wool socks.  You don’t
want to layer cotton socks unless you purchase your shoes with that many

So what do you do when you just can’t get outside because it is too cold? You
exercise inside, of course.  You don’t even need to spend any money.  Do you
have a flight of stairs in your house?
Go up and down them.  We all can find
something to clean in our house too.
That can be a good workout too.
Your local mall is a good idea too.
Some places have clubs for the mall walkers.
It is also a great way to meet people and to keep yourself motivated.  It is
always easier if you have a friend to take or go with you.  Videos or DVD’s are
also a source.  Tai Chi, Yoga or just a stretching tape is good.  We lose our
flexibility as we age and it is always a good thing to work on.
You should also try to strength train at least 3 times a week.
If you have the extra funds you can create your own home gym.
An exercise ball, weights (or can food), or an elastic pull.  If you
have more funds, you can purchase exercise equipment like an
exercise bike or elliptical machine.

Many of us may have joint problems.  Go to an indoor pool and check out when
they might have an exercise class or a group to play water sports. Even an
open swim time where you can either swim laps or work out in the water.

No matter what ideas you choose make sure you check with your physician
first to see if you have some limits.  Also make sure you have the right clothes
and equipment.

The second layer should be some kind of synthetic
fleece.  It will insulate you    from the cold and it is
known to dry quickly.  If you can find a
waterproof fleece jacket or coat, you can
use it as an outside layer too.

Ideas for outside exercise are: walking, jogging, snow
shoeing, skiing(down hill or cross country), sledding, go
build a snowman, or shovel your walk and driveway.
If you are going outside to exercise there are some things you
need to think about.  What do you wear? Cotton is not a good
thing to wear if you are going   to be sweating outside.  It may
soak up the moisture, but it doesn’t keep it away from your skin.  There is a
synthetic micro fiber called polypropylene. It too soaks up sweat, but it keeps it
away from your skin. Polypropylene should be your first layer when exercising
outside.
The third layer is your biggest defense
against the weather.  You want it to be
wind proof and water proof.  If it warms
up while you are out, you can take this
layer off and still be warm.
layers of socks on your feet.  If you buy your shoes
with 1 layer on and wear  more, your shoes can
become too tight and cut off your circulation.  Bad
thing for a diabetic!!  You also want to find some
all-climate shoes and some that are designed for
walking or jogging on slippery surfaces.
Your hands need to be kept warm too.
Mittens are better than gloves due to
the fact that your fingers stay warmer
when they are all together.  Make sure
the mittens have layers as well.
Let’s not forget about your neck and head.  You lose
most of your body heat out of your head. You want to
choose wool or fleece so that it keeps your sweat away
from your skin.  Also make sure you keep your ears
covered.  Don’t want them to fall off or get frost bite.
Another idea is to join a health club for the winter.
Many advertise month to month memberships.  If
it is a bigger place you may get the pool and the
machines all in one.  You could also meet new
people and arrange to meet up certain days of the
week.  Someone to push you to keep exercising
even when you don’t want too.
