This article looks at different ways that the family can make exercise fun and be able to
enjoy doing it together. Wouldn’t it be fun to get the child away from the Play Station
or X-Box for a while?
There are many different things that the family can do together that are in the form of
exercise, yet it won’t “feel” like exercise.
If you are lucky enough to have a large enough yard, why not get a trampoline? Kids
of any age enjoy bouncing about on one! Mom and dad could enjoy this also!
A nice trampoline can be pricey, so lets look at other things that you can also do.
Do you remember the days of old at the setting of the sun when you would play “kick
the bucket”? Or how about red rover? These kinds of games are slowly disappearing
from our culture. Teach your children how to play these simple games and get
involved! These games make for a lot of fun AND help with exercise! Make an
evening out of it. Why not have a BBQ and have a schedule of games for afterward?
The older children may not want to play these “younger” games. But there are other
things to do with them. For instance kite flying, softball, baseball, tennis. These kinds
of activities of course would mean going to an area that would support these kinds of
activities. At home why not have special races? Such as sack races. It may not be
easy to find sacks, but old pillowcases would do in a pinch! On warmer days try water
balloon fights! Teens would just LOVE to be able to get their parents with those
balloons! There is also dodge ball!
If you can not get the teens to participate still, try throwing the football or baseball with
the young adult males. For the young adult females, try purchasing learning DVDs on
belly dancing and/or hip-hop dancing. They will be thrilled that you are trying to learn
their styles of dance!
As you can see, the list of fun activities that promote exercise is endless! The most
important is to get the family involved with some fun exercise activities.

As we all know, exercise is vital for everyone
especially diabetics. There are many different
types of exercise to choose from – walking,
bicycling, machines, swimming, aerobics, etc.
These are all the usual kinds of exercises we
think of right away.
Does your entire family exercise? If they do, do
they exercise together or go and do their “own
thing”?
