B B King, the legendary blues guitarist, has been on tour for over fifty five
years and it seems almost nothing, not even diabetes is going to stop him.
Now 80 years old he knows all the tricks of staying on top of a condition
that could have forced him to stop singing and playing his beloved guitars.
When he was diagnosed about thirteen years ago he had no hope for a
long life because both his mother and father died of complications from
diabetes. But B B King is a fighter and decided to find out more about the
illness and read everything that he could get his hands on. Soon he
discovered that it was not a death sentence and that with good control he
did not have to give up his beloved music. Add to that a doctor who gave
him strict instructions on medication and what to eat, especially when he
was on tour, and you have a recipe for an active old age!
B B King’s one worry was that constant pricking of his fingers for blood
testing would ruin their sensitivity. However a new form of monitor came
to the rescue. One where you can take blood from anywhere on your
body. Technology is not just about music studios and slick recording
techniques, it’s about saving the hands of the greatest blues guitarist ever.
His doctor still nags BB King to lose more weight but this is difficult as he
has a hectic schedule of about eight months a year touring. When on tour
he can often end up having breakfast at midday and a big juicy steak late
at night. Being in a bus for much of the time could make exercise a
problem, but he manages to sneak in a walk as often as possible.
