1st Edition-August 2005
As a recently diagnosed diabetic I don't have much technical
knowledge, but I am familiar with eating. I love to eat, always have.
My mother was the world's greatest cook! In the two years prior to my
being diagnosed I went from 350 lbs to my current 200 lbs. I'm the
incredible shrinking man. I continue to lose weight at the rate of a
couple pounds per week. For me the self inflicted dietary restrictions
that are necessary for good blood glucose control is the most difficult
thing I have had to deal with.
Since being diagosed, I have been on a quest to find replacement
foods for the things I love. I've found a few that I really like and more
that I don't. Low carb foods are not difficult to find nowdays, and
sugar free and low fat foods are even easier to find. But do they
deliver what they claim ? Do they really taste as good as they claim ?
These are the questions I'm going to attempt to answer, and I
volunteer to be the quinea pig.
We might as well start off with the most important food substitute off
them all. . . sugar!

Splenda
I liked the taste of Splenda from the first. I have tried every sugar
substitute to be found on the local grocery store shelves and nothing
even comes close to Splenda. I honestly don't miss sugar any longer. As
far as I'm concerned, the search is over when it comes to sweetners.
Many products such as diet soft drinks and snacks now come sweetened
with Splenda. Those are the ones I look for.
From the Splenda website:
"Like other tabletop sweeteners, the granular and packet products
contain bulking ingredients, dextrose and/or maltodextrin, which are
natural food ingredients. These ingredients provide volume and contain
an insignificant amount of carbohydrate (less than 1 gram) and calories
(less than 5) per serving, so that SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener
meets FDA's standards for "no-calorie" food
Popsicle Sugar Free Products
These fudgesicles are my favorite snack treat. I really can't praise them
enough. I eat them on a daily basis. Their regular popsicles are
excellent as well. That kid chasing after the ice cream truck on a hot
summer afternoon is still alive and well, every time I'm sucking on a
fudgesicle.

When I first tried this product, I really didn't care for it. But I gave it a
retry just now and was pleasantly surprised. I was prepared to give it a
bad review, but this time it tasted good to me. The first time I tried the
Strawberry flavor but this time it was Peaches & Cream. Perhaps the
flavors made the difference or perhaps just my taste buds are getting
used to low carbs. I'm still a bit undecided about these. I'll try other
flavors in the future and let you know.
