We are all at risk for heat stroke in hot weather and the older people are at a higher
risk for developing heat related illness. The ability to respond to summer heat can
become less efficient with advancing years.
Fortunately, the summer can remain safe and enjoyable for everyone who uses
good sound judgment.
You may experience heat stress, heat fatigue, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after
exercise in the heat). Heat cramps and heat exhaustion, are all forms of
"hypothermia" (the general name given for the variety of heat related illness')
Symptoms may include:
Headaches, nausea, muscle spasms, and fatigue after exposure to the heat.
If you suspect someone is suffering form to heat related illness:
Get them out of the sun and into a cool place, preferably one that is air-conditioned
Offer fluids, but avoid alcohol and caffeine, water is best
Encourage them to shower, bathe, or sponge off with cool water.
Urge them to lie down and rest in an cool place out of the sun
Heat stroke is very dangerous for older persons. It requires emergency attention. A
person with heat stroke has a body temp above 104 may have symptoms such as
confusion, combativeness, bizarre behavior, faintness, staggering, strong rapid
pulse, dry flushed skin, lack of sweating, possible delirium or coma.
The temperature does not have to hit 100 for a person to be at risk for hypothermia
both depends on their general health and/or life style. But may increase the threat
of a heat related illness.
Health factors that may increase risk include:
Age related change to the skin, such as poor circulation, heart, lung, kidney disease
as well as any illness that cause general weakness or fever.
High Blood Pressure or conditions that requires changes in diet, such as diabetes,
and as in salt restricted diet.
The inability to sweat caused by medicines.
Being under weight or over weight.
Lifestyle factors also increase risk include hot living quarters, lack of transportation,
overdressing and being in a crowded place..
People with out fans and with out air conditioners should go to malls or the movies,
or libraries, or to a friends house, or to relatives homes that do have these things.
Many communities and area agencies, religious groups and senior citizen centers
also provide such services as cooling centers and provide transportation.
Please don't think that you can ride the heat out at home, if you do not have a fan or
A/C. Please check with your relatives or friends for help or go to the places I have
listed for help, this is a serious matter! To many people have already died this
summer from the heat, and it is unnecessary! Please don't let pride get in your way.
Many places as the Salvation Army, Red Cross, and some of the TV stations are
even giving away free fans to people who do not have them.
Please, find a way to stay cool and safe this summer season.
Your life depends on it!
Blessings to you all!
